About the project
Religious tourism, spiritual tourism, sacred tourism, or faith tourism involves people travelling for religious purposes, such as pilgrimage or sightseen of religious character. Religious tourism is not just for religious people, many people engage in religious tourism for spiritual reasons or just our of general interest.
European Cultural Routes include several religious and pilgrimage routes, including Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe, such as St James, St Olav, St Martins, Via Francigena, Via Regia, Jewish Heritage, Cyril and Methodius. Other religious-based routes are in progress, such as St Francis and Apostle Paul.
Along such cultural routes there are several tourism activities and related good practices for sustainable tourism, but in many cases the cultural tourism potential has not been fully developed so far. There is a need therefore for policy instruments, such as tourism development plans and strategies, to be enhanced for the full benefits of religious tourism.
