The European strategy for plastics will build on this, with the goal of ensuring that all plastic packaging is reusable or recyclable in a cost-effective manner by 2030.
Italy is well positioned amongst European countries in the recycling of plastic packaging with a rate of 41% in 2015, but it has to still improve in order to meet the Directive targets. A systemic solution, starting from the design phase up to the end of life, is needed to face the challenge.
In order to enable that, as part of TRIS activities to facilitate industrial symbiosis uptake by connecting innovation needs with solution providers, ASTER organized a working meeting between the Italian National Consortium for plastic packaging collection and recycling (COREPLA) and 10 representatives of the Regional Universities and Research Centers. The consortium has launched a specific call for ideas in order to scout solutions for improving the rate of plastic collection, the quality and the destination markets of the recycled material.
