This is the good practice's implementation level. It can be national, regional or local.
About this good practice
The time of implementation of the 5th generation radio systems is not only a revolution for mobile network operators and individual customers who, thanks to new solutions, will receive faster access to the Internet. It is first and foremost a time of implementing numerous innovative technologies and solutions aimed at industrial customers. Reliable and fast communication will enable, among others, an effective use of 5G networks in controlling and managing production processes and will contribute to the development of Industry 4.0. The possibility of effective communication with a huge number of devices combined with the use of artificial intelligence methods is the basis for the development of the Internet of Things services and the implementation of the concept of smart cities.
The 5G Competence Centre of the Łódź University of Technology provides support for enterprises in their work on new services and technologies.
Achieving the project's objectives is possible thanks to the installation of the pilot 5G network on the Łódź University of Technology campus.
The main beneficiaries of the project are entrepreneurs, who have been provided with space to test 5G network solutions, as well as scientists developing technologies based on the 5G standard.

Resources needed
The amount allocated for the investment amounted to PLN 1 million (approx. EUR 230,000). The own contribution of the Łódź University of Technology amounted to 25% of this sum. Experts in telecommunications and wireless networks are also required to participate in such project.
Evidence of success
The 5G Competence Center has created an information portal devoted entirely to this technology. In addition, new servers were purchased, which facilitated the construction of the pilot 5G network at the Łódź University of Technology. The Competence Centre of the Łódź University of Technology is also a part of the 5G Digital Innovation Hub.
The center tests technologies related to the use of 5G networks in such areas as health care and communication with drones.

Potential for learning or transfer
The 5G Competence Center is the result of cooperation between Łódź University of Technology with both local and central government authorities. The location and establishment of the 5G pilot network on the university campus was possible thanks to the support of the Ministry of Development, Ministry of Digitalisation and Polish Office of Electronic Communications. The initiative was also supported by the Marshal's Office of the Łódzkie Voivodship.
The creation of a similar pilot project, due to issues such as cyber security, requires the involvement of many entities, but the benefits of the 5G network for the development of the Internet of Things and the entire concept of Industry 4.0 are undeniable. 5G network enables reliable wireless communication with delays not exceeding a single millisecond, which makes it possible to develop scalable systems allowing to control industrial processes or build intelligent road transport systems, including solutions designed for autonomous vehicles.
