About this good practice
The Bastion building is a part of Bardejov fortification system, which was one of the most perfect and best-preserved Gothic city fortifications protecting Slovak medieval towns. It is situated in Eastern Slovakia. The first mention of the Bastion comes from the year 1352. Building has 5 floors. The building of the old gothic bastion has not been renovated since 1958, when it was repaired after a fire. Until 1985 it was used as a warehouse. From 1985 to 2013 it fell into disrepair.
The owner of the building is the city of Bardejov. The civic association OZ Different has a long-term lease for the building for an indefinite period with a minimum guarantee until 2035.
OZ Different has been reconstructing the gothic Bastion and creating a cultural and community activities for the local community and region. The year-round program includes about 200 events - concerts, theatre, discussions, cinema, workshops, markets, bazaars, quizzes, events for families and children, lecture. Team OZ Different is still continuing to renovate the building, depending on resources. Activities are carried out by volunteers.

Evidence of success
Significant help from the local community and volunteers (extremely much
work for little money).
Stable centre with a year-round program and its operation on the first two
floors.

Potential for learning or transfer
The combination of the non-profit sector in cooperation and possible support of the city, region and state is visibly the best way to operate. In our opinion, the combination of creativity, less bureaucracy, expertise and responsibly and directly distributed competencies is a solution for good development. The interplay between conservation of the monument and cultural use strengthens the public perception of this cultural heritage and complements the cultural offer in the city. The example can be applied to many cities
