BUS2025
About this good practice
The Action consists of works to install electrical and bio-CNG charging infrastructure in 9
existing bus depots in the Paris region, namely, 4 for a new fleet of bio-CNG buses and 5
with charging infrastructure for a new fleet of battery-electric buses. The Action will also
support the acquisition of 303 electric buses.
As a result, the Action will contribute to accelerating the large-scale roll-out of fossil fuel
free bio-CNG and battery electric buses to decarbonise public transport in the Paris region,
located along the Atlantic and North Sea-Mediterranean corridors.
The Action is part of the Bus2025 Global Project that involves the renewal of the entire RATP
bus fleet and the conversion to electricity or Bio-CNG of the 25 bus depots located in the
Paris region. The Global Project will contribute significantly to the objectives of the European
Green Deal with a 75% reduction greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2025 thanks to the
renewal of the entire RATP bus fleet and the use of 100% of renewable bio-CNG guaranteed
by certificates of origin.
This Action has been selected in the context of the CEF Blending facility Call, where the CEF
support is coupled with a substantial investment by a financial institution
Expert opinion
Cities across Europe face the challenge of both increasing the use of sustainable public transport, and also reducing the carbon emissions of the sector. This will entail the replacement of existing vehicle fleets and the installation of charging infrastructure, requiring significant up-front investments. The Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) demonstrates a way forward with its Blending Facility, using public funds to encourage investors and financial institutions to make the necessary investments. Bus2025 itself also represents a good practice, setting out a long-term strategy for 100% decarbonised bus fleet, indicating the mid-term policy direction and commitment.
Resources needed
Total eligible costs:
EUR 129,483,600
Maximum EU contribution:
EUR 22,999,860
Evidence of success
where we are (end 2022) :
4 depots fully converted
6 depots converted and receving new buses
10 depots at work
5 depots into studies
52% clean buses (550 electric and 750 biogas)
Potential for learning or transfer
Each RATP bus centre is converted either to electric bus operations or biogas bus operations, mutually exclusive. The preferred technology choice is based on a multicriteria assessment including land-use and urban insertion, bus operation constraints, or operating performance delivered by each technology.
