Cashless payment of fare in public transport vehicles in Ostrava

About this good practice
• Outgoing check-in system, paper ticket markers in vehicles and the need to purchase a new one;
• making public services more attractive, the possibility of accepting modern technologies such as Apple Pay / Apple Watch, Google Pay; use of tokenization of any carrier using NFC;
• simplification of tariffs and friendliness for passengers; the passenger may not know fare at all, just attach the card when boarding the vehicle without making any choice;
• Fare capping capability
• Virtual tariff settings without having to print new tickets;
• tariff and check-in settings within the multimodal transport system (Public transport, bikesharing …… ..);
• No costs for the production and distribution of fare carriers;
• Ecology (no paper);
• Transport demand overview (vehicle check-in / out gives information about passenger movement);
Stakeholders
1) City Transport Company Ostrava, joint-stock company ensuring the operation of check-in terminals in their vehicles
2) ODIS coordinator, limited liability company, which carries out the technical management of contactless bank payment cards
3) banking institution is Československá obchodní banka a.s.(Czech-Slovak commercial bank), which deals the issue of acceptance, tokenization of used contactless bank cards
4) company XT Card a.s., which operates the customer portal of bank payment cards and clearing center

Resources needed
The investment was approximately EUR 2,1 mil.
Evidence of success
Long-term trend in the development of electronic ticket , level of sales has been approximately four times higher since the introduction of payment card handling (8.73% in sec.mid-2016 vs. 31.93% for 2018).
