GetHyGa: PavinG an Energy and Technology way on HYdrogen alonG Aragon
About this good practice
The GetHyGA initiative is an Action Plan emerged from the Aragon Hydrogen Master Plan. Its objective is to create an industrial ecosystem, or hydrogen valley, in Aragon. It has been promoted by the Department of Industry, Competitiveness and Business Development of the Government of Aragon through the Foundation for the Development of New Hydrogen Technologies in Aragon (FHA).
It details actions that are based on the objectives of decarbonisation or electrification of those sectors that must reduce or eliminate the carbon footprint in their activities and processes.
GetHyGA is focused on public-private collaboration, foreseeing a cooperative development through multiple partnerships between the actors involved (companies, energy and hydrogen sector, educational and training entities, R&D&I, public administrations, etc.). In particular, the project is expected to involve all parts of the value chain of the industrial Aragonese environment, from the production, transport and storage, to its final uses as a source of energy for mobility or industrial purposes.
GetHyGA contributes to the rebalancing of the economic activity and employment, to reverse the trend of population decline in certain areas of the region, and involve other regions and other EU countries.
Resources needed
The combined budget of all these initiatives that constitute GetHyGA amounts to 2,354 million euros, with an expected economic impact of 10,865 million euros over the next 15 years. Currently 78 entities have joined the initiative.
Evidence of success
In July 2021, the presentation of the GetHyGa initiative took place. This is the result of a year of work in which each of the projects proposed by each entity were defined and evaluated. All these projects are defined in the project report, together with the main contacts of all the participating entities.
The main result achieved up to now is the adhesion of multiple entities (78) to the initiative, which set the basis to develop a complete hydrogen ecosystem in Aragon.
Potential for learning or transfer
In the context of the development of hydrogen technologies, any region could replicate the GetHyGa initiative. The public and private character of this kind of initiative is crucial for the deployment of new hydrogen technologies.
Thus, the process of creating the Action Plan lasted one year and resulted in the adhesion of 78 organizations, as well as the analysis reports of all the projects that make up the ambitious initiative to create a hydrogen valley in Aragon.
This initiative can be replicated and acquired by regions that are at different levels of implementation of hydrogen technologies, being a good starting point for regions in states of low deployment or, on the contrary, as a way to establish common alliances and expanding hydrogen deployment projects in those regions that already have certain demonstration projects implemented.
