This is the good practice's implementation level. It can be national, regional or local.
About this good practice
Inovgrid is a smart grid project led by EDP Distribuição (DSO), developed in the city of Évora (Alentejo Region), reaching around 30,000 consumption points, corresponding to 54,000 customers with an annual consumption of approximately 270 GWh.
Inovgrid is an innovative project that aims to provide the electricity network with information and intelligent equipment that can promote the active participation of consumers, integrate distributed generation and electric vehicles, automate grid management, improve quality of service, reduce operating costs, promote energy efficiency and environmental sustainability and also help to reduce national energy dependence.
InovGrid is the future of energy distribution in Portugal: an energetically smarter, more efficient, more competitive and more responsible future.
With the liberalization of the growing electricity markets, the benefits that can be gained are becoming increasingly apparent: in the form of more flexible tariffs, new products and services adapted to the consumer.
With InovGrid the customer can analyse in more detail its consumptions, bringing the demand supply closer to the energy. In addition, this ensures greater security of supply, further diversifying renewable sources and increasing the integration capacity of distributed generation in the system. Finally, the very renewal of networks and their operation becomes easier, as reliability and efficiency increase with their automation and remote control.

Resources needed
The project was based on a technical architecture composed of the following elements: 32000 EDP Box (EB) energy metering; 350 Distribution Transformer Controlers (DTCs); and information systems. Altogether, it represented an overall investment of € 15.661.662,00.
Evidence of success
The Main quantified benefits \ results are:
» Energy Efficiency – 3.9% energy reduction InovCity
» C&T Losses – Reduction expected between 2% and 4%
» Field Operations – Large majority will be done remotely
» Selected as the single case study to smart grids, by the European Commission and Eurelectric;

Potential for learning or transfer
The first pilot took place in Évora, however EDP Distribuição, is deploying the concept in other 7 new locations, to consolidate knowledge and test different technologies. The idea is to integrate new technologies, different social and environmental characteristics, different grids conditions, new smart grids applications and increasing business process integration. After all this process, they await a decision by the government to define the national rollout.
Taking into account its characteristics and scope, this will be an experience of interest and easy transfer to another region.
