About this good practice

The Lahti environmental watch website makes visible the environmental work done by the city of Lahti. The website presents measures with which the city promotes its ambitious climate, circular economy and other environmental goals.

The measures are part of Lahti's Climate Programme, Circular Economy Roadmap and Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, comprising about about 200 actions in total.
The measures presented in Lahti's environmental watch are actions that the city can directly influence. In addition to the measures, the website presents indicators and data collected by the city.

In the description of each measure, a contact person from the city, estimated timetable and more specific tasks are presented. The contact person updates the progress of the measure once or twice a year. The environmental development team can follow the overall picture of the implementation of the roadmaps and programs. In addition, the website is available for everyone: all the citizens, politicians, other municipalities etc.

Resources needed

The city assigned one person to be the project implementation owner. After the first user training and the platform going live, a minimal number of people are needed to run the platform, technical support coming from the tool provider. Environmental coordinators update new measures to the platform.

Evidence of success

Lahti Environmental Watch drew wide positive attention within the city organisation - as many as 150 of Lahti employees joined an intro session.

The information can be used for communication needs and raising awareness as well as for reporting. It is a tool that combines and replaces other platforms and is open to everyone. It is possible to find a named city contact person for each action from the service. There is also an open feedback channel to report about the functionality of the tool.

Potential for learning or transfer

Kausal Environmental Watch is offered as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution available to any other cities for the implementation of their climate action plan, sustainability action plan, circular economy action plan, mobility plan, or any other sustainability-related plans.
