Mental and Manual Lab for a Fair and Circular Economy
About this good practice
Karpos’ experience in the management of the textile dump allowed to grasp the new need: their re-use.
The growing interest towards circular economy and the developing opportunity of re-use/recycle push Karpos to start the project. In addition, it also aims to create job opportunities for weak groups, especially women.
The project allowed the realization of a place where fair and circular economy come together with textile re-production, training, and cultural activities.
The context in which the activity take place is an area that needs re-vitalization and the Lab is a meeting place for who lives there. This also helped with the courses and tailoring activities that promote intergenerational and cultural exchange. It also represents a new selling point in a not-commercially-active area.
The stakeholders of the project are: Confcooperative Pordenone; ISIA Roma Design (Pordenone Universities); ITI Sistema Moda; Social Services, and ASFO; local textile and furniture companies.
The main beneficiaries are women that works in an exhausting environment and cannot easily reach the retirement age. Single women with children that, without relatives, needs special working hours. Traded and abused victims. Old women that are not able to work anymore but can pass on their knowledge to the new generations.
Other beneficiaries are children involved on re-use labs, disadvantaged people, and the community in general.
Resources needed
The project was funded by a public call launched by the Municipality of Pordenone called: “For an inclusive and accessible company". The contribution of the call, used for buying the necessary tools, was 18,060.83 euros. All products are sold in a small shop next to the lab.
Evidence of success
The factors of success are:
1. New job occupation with focus of weak groups;
2. Local origin of the products;
3. Development of a local market of recycled products;
4. Textile production reduction;
5. Re-vitalization of the area;
6. Diffusion of the creative re-use and circular economy with the society involvement.
The project needs improvement on the selling aspect.
Potential for learning or transfer
The project aligns with the Agenda 2030 goals: 5, 8, and 12.
Those principles are applicable in all EU States and can be implemented also in other specific contexts such as jails and hospitality buildings.
