Modernization of Zoo Zagreb, Phase I
About this good practice
The problems that were to be solved are: inadequate space to accommodate desired animal species, fulfilment of EU requirements, inability to expand in an existing location, insufficient infrastructure and supply in existing facilities (parking lot, toilet, restaurant, ticket office, walking paths, educational center), lack of administrative capacity. Green infrastructure were implemented. It is a green wall, which we use to promote green infrastructure. Within the building, larger glass surfaces, which become a danger to birds, are specially marked. Hot water heaters were installed. The project created a housing for animals "Large aviary for African birds". Above the inner part, there is a large green roof, with which we have reduced the cost of heating and energy losses. In addition to this system, a water biofiltration system was built and is in operation in the outer part of the house. Using a pump, water from the smaller lake is pumped into the area where the reeds grow. Given that the water is loaded with organic bird waste, in this way, through water circulation, water hygiene is ensured, unpleasant odors are avoided. Over 80 trees and several hundred pieces of different bushes were also planted. Stakeholders of the project were city administrative bodies, Zagreb Zoo, Zagreb Tourist Board, citizens, tourists, competent state administration bodies, non-governmental organizations dealing with environmental and nature protection, and animal protection.
Resources needed
The project is co-financed by the European Union (ERDF). Total value of the project: EUR 5.000.000,00. EU funding - 95%, Partners- 5%
The team consists of 14 people from the City of Zagreb, ZOO Zagreb and two external members.
Evidence of success
Results are increased attendance at ZOO Zagreb and Maksimir Park by 65%, increased number of participants in education by 59%, targeted practical solutions-plant purifier, heat pumps, pellet heating, use of thermal energy. The number of endangered species has also increased(9 endangered species and their total number has increased from 17 to 69). During the outbreak of the bird flu epidemic, the new aviary house and the Dalmatian pelican housing provided the possibility care for the animals.
Potential for learning or transfer
The project raised the quality of animal accommodation, improved quality of the offer to visitors and working conditions for employees. New IT technologies intended for education have been introduced, as well as modern technological solutions less harmful to the environment. The positive image created by the project refers to the compliance of all standards and criteria related to the keeping of wild animals in zoos, the implementation of intensive education of citizens on the protection of nature and animals and the green infrastructure applied solutions. This project was presented during meetings at European Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The last gathering was organized by the American Embassy for journalists from North Macedonia. The project was also presented at professional gatherings of architects and conservators, where emphasis was placed on the solutions used in this protected area.
