MuoviSampo -plastic recycling concept
About this good practice
The aim is to make recycling more meaningful and to increase the recyclability and
further use of recycled material. The system helps consumers to identify recyclable, high
value-added material and motivates it to be recycled separately. The application is tested in its planned operating environment with the help of plastic collection pilots around South Ostrobothnia, and the recyclability of the collected plastic is assessed.
The collection points collect hard packaging polypropylene (PP), but there is also a
regular plastic collection point in the vicinity of the collection points. A deposit of € 0.50 /
kg is available for hard packaging polypropylene. To receive the deposit, you must
register as a MuoviSammo user with e-mail IDs. The deposit is saved at your collection point in your MuoviSampo account and you can use it in a nearby store by showing your MuoviSampo account at the store's checkout.
There is still room for improvement in plastic recycling and collection. The experiment
will test a new type of collection system and provide opportunities and conditions for the introduction of a similar system by making the system more usable.
Resources needed
European Regional Development Fund's Sustainable Growth and Jobs program 147000€. In addition, the municipalities of Ilmajoki, Kauhava, Kurikka, Lapua and Soini, as well as the Soini 4H Association, support the project.
Evidence of success
The recycling of different fractions were improved and successful if it is made easy and
motivated with a small financial compensation.
In total, 65 and 75 percent of those who had earlier disposed their plastic packaging as mixed waste or incinerated it said that the economic benefit could improve their waste sorting habits. A clear majority said that an economic incentive would drive them to improve their sorting
Potential for learning or transfer
It is possible to significantly increase recycling as long as the right and easy methods are
developed.
The deposit system could, for example, contribute to preventing the incineration of plastic waste in rural areas. Almost 850 kilograms of generic mass-based plastic waste was collected during the campaign days.
