About this good practice
Objective is to offer safe living for elderly at home and get important information about daily life of elderly. Night-time distance monitoring is carried out with a solution called Safebed in the home care of the city of Seinäjoki. Safebed is a device that is in bed under the mattress, and it monitors person’s sleep. Through it, home care personnel can monitor the customers sleep quality as well as basic parameters such as movement, heart rate and breathing rate. This information has value when person’s needs for care are estimated.
Equipment is placed under the mattress and it is normally used 3-4 weeks per customer. It is easy to install, use and interpret. It gives out good information about the customer. Currently the information gained is documented manually to the care plan. Safebed is used for determining the correct time for morning home care visit (when does the customer wake up) and it also tells about the customers nights whether they are sleeping and if they can manage on their own during nights.
Main stakeholders include city of Seinäjoki (especially home care unit), patients and their relatives.

Resources needed
Financial resources around 50€ per month and human resources as part of normal workday (no extra human resources or minimum).
Evidence of success
Home care nurses and relatives have possibility to get important information with this technology about the well-being of the elderly person. This was noted from the Bikva group interviews done during the INTENCIVE project. Benefits of the equipment were clearly seen from two interviews and it was stated repeatedly that it is easy to use. Equipment does not show to the customers.
Potential for learning or transfer
Systematic usage of night-time monitoring in the home care has clearly shown benefits. When a new customer comes to home care usage of such device can easily give out information about the customers daily routine. Many times, even the family members do not know for sure whether the person sleeps during the night or not. When the concept of using the devices is in place, the equipment is easy to use and gives out valuable information.
