“Team-To-Market” programme: better recruitment of business managers for the creation of spin-offs
About this good practice
Every year, many inventions are created in the public research laboratories of the Grand Est region, some of which lead to the creation of spin-offs. It remains a complex task to mobilise experienced project leaders and to bring together solid business teams alongside the scientific teams. These factors are nonetheless essential for the successful launch of these start-ups.
Team-To-Market facilitates the creation of spin-offs by supporting the early enrolment of specialised business and market managers:
1. Sourcing projects in need of team structuring: when the project is aimed at a start-up, looking for a third-party business, or orphan projects.
2. Expression of need: website advertising spin-off projects and profiles sought, offers on LinkedIn, publication in specialist media.
3. Matching with the scientific team: selection of C-level candidates by the ecosystem based on their complementarity with the skills required, followed by a meeting with the researchers.
4. Initiating the collaboration: funding of up to €20,000 for 3 to 6 months by the Grand Est Region for a consultancy assignment before the start-up is created.
Team-to-Market benefits researchers who are better equipped to create a spin-off for their technology. It also offers a career opportunity for sought-after profiles (executives undergoing retraining, interim managers, serial start-ups, business developers, consultants, etc.).
Resources needed
Budget: 500k€ Region grant (10k€ to 20k€ per C-level mission)
HRs: approx 1 FTE distributed.
SATT Conectus Alsace (OTT) identifies research results with spin-off potential, the incubator Quest for Change trains and selects candidates, and the Region contributes financially.
Evidence of success
The Team-to-Market website always features 4 to 10 spin-offs that are at an early stage of development and are looking for C-level staff: CEO, Business Manager, Business Planner or Business Developer.
Since 2018, the programme made it possible to carry out 15 successful spin-offs matches which led to the creation of 12 startups.
Potential for learning or transfer
Team-to-Market has been launched by Conectus and two others regional SATT (Sayens and Nord) with the support of the Grand Est Region. It is now also being rolled out by SATT AxLR and Toulouse Tech Transfer, supported by the Occitanie Region.
Recognised for its expertise and successful results in Team-to-Market, the team in charge of this programme also contributed to the design of “Les DeepTech” programme and more particularly Tandem, programmme supported by Bpifrance, the public innovation bank, a key organisation in the development of spin-offs in France. This other programme was strongly inspired by Team-to-Market in its support process.
