PI VSC - Management plan of the ecological network areas and protected areas of Spačva basin
About this good practice
Changes in the Spačva basin have been investigated for many years. They are mostly negative and are directly related to the problem of drying and degradation of Slavonian oak forests. In order to find solutions, it is necessary to ensure the creation of a Management Plan based on technical data within the framework of management for area and its heritage. The management plan (MP) for the areas of ecological network and protected areas of the Spačva basin is a strategic document of the Public institution for management of protected natural values in Vukovar-Srijem County (PI VSC). First of all, it was designed to help the Public Institution to manage protected areas and areas of the ecological network in a long-term and efficient manner with the help of natural solutions.
Resources needed
MP has been developed by the PI VSC in cooperation with Unit for project implementation-WYG consultation Ltd.,Particip GmbH,and the Ministry of economy and sustainable development as part of the project Development of framework for the management of Natura 2000 whose value is 21,037,023.39 €.
Evidence of success
PI VSC is expert and dedicated public institution, which manages 10 ecological network areas and 8 protected areas for the last 15 years. It is a competent and reliable public body for managing nature conservation at county level. The most significant success was the creation and implementation of this Plan in cooperation with other stakeholders, despite the lack of awareness of need to protect nature and implement natural solutions at the local level.
Potential for learning or transfer
The example of an institution such as PI VSC can be useful to anyone who needs to harmonize socially important issues, nature protection and forestry conservation in cooperation with regional and local authorities. For this practice, it is important to include as many stakeholders as possible, from forest owners, farmers to experts and universities. Everyone is welcome with suggestions and concrete examples which relate to preservation of the forests of the Spačva basin. It is crucial that all stakeholders accept PI VSC as the main institution that will set a common goal accepted by all stakeholders, which refers to the protection, maintenance and promotion of the protected area, i.e. the forests of the Spačva basin. On the basis of the set goals and implementation of joint activities, results and recommendations for climate-adaptable and environmentally friendly forestry with the aim of preserving regulatory mechanisms in the ecosystem and biological diversity will emerge.
