About this good practice
Tourism in the Canary Islands is a very important factor in the local economy. However, with the COVID-19 crisis, the figures fell, and we found that some tourist entities had an old-fashioned and poor IT network, no security tools, data easily accessible, and an unstructured and basic tool to capture analyse visitors’ opinions about the tourist experience.
CIDIHUB develops this initiative within the DIH-World experiments project related to Wine Tourism. In this initiative, there are two main roles: the SMEs where designing, implementing and validating the proposed digital solutions took place, and CIDIHUB the technical and technological support. In this experiment we focus on data collection and Big Data analysis and visualization to optimize customer-centered design of wines using cybersecurity and Big Data tools.
The experiment was implemented in three phases: the IT Network, the Cybersecurity platform, and the Big Data customer-centered solution.
This experiment helps to study the expectations of the tourists and CIDIHUB foster the collaboration in a public-private partnership, not only with the local technology companies but also enhancing the creation of new ecosystems to feed the tourism sector with an innovative offer that takes into account the technology as an ‘’asset enhancer” and new experiences facilitator.
Main beneficiaries: tourists from outside and from the region (local tourism), owners and managers of site of tourist interest.

In less than one year: Over 100 people attending different training and awareness activities. Over 30 organisations involved in business technology mentoring projects. 15 research and innovation collaboration proposals submitted
Potential for learning or transfer
Ecommerce websites are already under fire by hackers who attempt to steal their customers’ card details. It is only a matter of time until they start hacking retailers’ augmented reality and virtual reality shopping apps. After all, customers have their cards and mobile payment solutions already recorded in their user profiles. So, we consider this practice as good because cybersecurity should be the first step to be taken by any tourism company on its way to digital transformation.
Nowadays, the winery achieves: be forefront of cybersecurity applied to regular SMEs, to have a modern and secure network with a customer-centred design platform, and to be a “best practice” of digital transformation in the region.
This practice can be easy to transfer and implement in other destinations. And during the virtual study visit, the partners were interested specifically in the BigData analysis and processing and how to improve the visitor’s satisfaction within questionnaires.
