RSL Op Post
About this good practice
RSL Op Post rethinks traditional social care for vulnerable citizens by empowering them to leverage their talents and environment for self-sustainability and expanding social networks. This approach gives people ownership, enabling them to help themselves using their own resources.
The hub operates through a strong partnership of diverse organizations, each engaging different target groups. It offers essential services like a night shelter and social grocery, alongside programs in various life areas: work (thrift shop), leisure (knitting, toy library), welfare (social workers, low-budget cooking), and education (digital literacy). The Makerslab, with 3D printers and laser cutters, fosters creative production and innovation.
Key stakeholders include social organizations, local businesses, and the City of Roeselare, benefitting vulnerable citizens and the wider community. The project connects a broad range of services, from basic needs to education and recreation, reflecting its holistic approach. RSL Op Post fosters collaboration and innovation, serving as a space where diverse users develop, test and share ideas. Built on 'meeting' and 'making', it promotes social networks and sustainability, addressing both basic needs and inspiring new approaches to societal challenges.
RSL Op Post is more than a building. It's a community, a hub, an idea...

Potential for learning or transfer
RSL Op Post's experimental approach to social work, where people own their development process, offers a unique model for empowering self-reliance. The strong partnership with the city and alignment with local priorities/USP's (SHOPPING, KOERS/biking, FOOD) makes it a replicable model for other regions.
The hub's commitment to inclusivity and sustainability, such as through the Makerslab and social grocery, can inspire similar initiatives that foster sustainable and inclusive urban living. Its approach to integrating various life domains under one roof offers a practical, scalable framework for creating resilient, supportive urban communities. Successful transfer depends on aligning with local needs and securing robust partnerships.
