Sliabh Bawn Wind Farm
About this good practice
The Sliabh Bawn Wind Farm is located in Doughill Forest outside Strokestown Co Roscommon. The farm comprises twenty (20) wind turbines of total export capacity of 58 MW or the equivalent of approximately 37,700 households. The project also includes a Community Benefit Scheme to deliver improved local amenities and recreational facilities and give back to the community by supporting local projects.
Resources needed
The Scheme was set up in 2017 for a 25-year operational horizon. Utilising a €500K investment over the course of eight (8) years a series of strategic projects were funded including the 24km of looped walks, a trim rail for fitness, an equestrian trail, a raised viewing platform, and a picnic area.
Evidence of success
In September 2017, the world class recreation facilities at Sliabh Bawn were publically opened; trails of more than 28km of way-marked trails for walking, running and horse riding. The Wind Farm has become a popular recreation amenity in the area. Visitor numbers have risen sharply, by more than 80% since completion. It hosts over 1,600 visitors on a monthly basis, including school tours in the newly established Native Trees Section.
Potential for learning or transfer
Sliabh Bawn Windfarm is a popular and successful amenity. This is a good example of how we can fulfill our commitment to investing in renewable energy resources couple with investments into the community.
The success of this project is built on the commitment of the Sliabh Bawn Power DAC operators to:
- Always being open and communicating proactively with the local community throughout the project and responding to community needs.
- Improving local amenity and recreation for all visitors to Sliabh Bawn.
- Protection of the natural environment with careful management of replanted trees replacing those removed during construction.
- Supporting local community projects via the Sliabh Bawn Community Fund.
