About this good practice
Steinbeis is a global player in the sharing (“transfer”) of entrepreneurial knowledge and technology. The Steinbeis Network currently encompasses roughly 1,100 Steinbeis Enterprises (SEs). Its main mission is to foster effective and efficient cooperation between the world of science and academia on the one hand, and trade and business on the other. This network, which is composed of independently organized SE offering specific, customer-oriented services and covering a wide spectrum of expertise ranging from research and development, consulting, expert reports, continuing professional development and training to various fields of management, notably contributes to the development and internationalization of SMEs in Germany and in Europe. The Steinbeis foster knowledge and technology transfer by matching a customer coming up with an issue or challenge with one or several SE able to help him find a solution. The Steinbeis Network skillfully uses the research facilities of its members, particularly at universities, to develop professional solutions that are tailor-made, based on scientific findings and applicable to concrete business contexts. During its existence, Steinbeis has generated various sources of knowledge and technological innovation. These have been connected into the network involving higher education institutions, universities, research facilities and businesses, thanks to which Steinbeis strengthen effective cooperation between science and academia,.
Resources needed
Steinbeis Foundation was founded in 1971 with a starting capital of DM 68.000 (34.768Euro) as a foundation under the German Civil Code and a key service provider in supporting SMEs. This network encompassed 2,001 employees and 3,468 contractors with a total turnover of 172.6 million euros in 2018.
Evidence of success
Since the creation of the foundation in 1971, Steinbeis has become synonymous with the successful transfer of tangible, market-based knowledge & technology. The Steinbeis Network builds solid, steady bridges between science, academia, trade & industry. The numbers illustrate the outreach of this network: 1.000 Steinbeis Enterprises, 800 professors, 5.000 collaborators and 10.000 projects per year. The attention paid for the actual benefit of transfer each partner is a reason for its success.
Potential for learning or transfer
The Steinbeis Transfer Network constitutes the main instrument within the Steinbeis Foundation for sharing entrepreneurial knowledge and technology. The Steinbeis Transfer Network is solely composed of Steinbeis Enterprises (SEs) whereas the Steinbeis Network also comprises Steinbeis Partners.
The success of the Steinbeis Network not only translates the benefits and added value of public-private partnerships but also meets an increasing demand from companies and research institutions alike to bridge the gap between research and industry. The current emergence of many local centres of technology transfer at universities and research institutes conveys the topicality of knowledge and technology transfer.
Taking into account that SEs are legally dependent units or legally independent units with majority/minority shareholdings, such model can be replicated in other regions and countries (maybe in smaller dimensions).
