About this good practice
Efforts to increase the recycling rate for C&D waste have shown that many actors involved in the construction/demolition sector. However, communication among these is often limited and knowledge about proper procedures incomplete. As a solution, the Styrian Guide to C&D waste was established as a target group-specific, comprehensive and clear online guide in 2012. High access numbers and increasing recycling rates showed the success of this online tool. Therefore, a revision was carried out in 2015 in order to integrate the requirements of the new Austrian Recycling Building Materials Ordinance (e.g. obligatory investigations of pollutants and impurities prior to demolition, definition of quality criteria and quality assurance for recycling building materials). The last revision was carried out in 2020 in the context of the Interreg Europe project CONDEREFF: The guide was expanded to include the topics of re-use of building components and management of invasive neophytes on construction sites, and translated into English.
The Styrian C&D Waste Guide is available online and free of charge. It is divided into separate chapters for building owners, planners, authorities, contractors, and waste management companies. The guide was compiled by the Region of Styria in collaboration with the regional Chamber of Civil Engineers, the customs office, the building guild, the waste management industry and numerous other stakeholders of the CONDEREFF project.

Resources needed
The last revision of the main document required about 10 person-days (high-level), a coordination process with the stakeholders, and expenses for layout, translation and dissemination. The web application runs on the website of the Province of Styria and does not incur any relevant additional costs.
Evidence of success
Feedback and access figures show that the Styrian C&D Waste Guide is gladly used by all actors in Styria and even beyond. It is also a success that all partners of the first version have also contributed to the revisions.
Potential for learning or transfer
The idea of a simple, clear and target group-oriented online guide is easy to implement. With the English version now available, the red thread can easily be transferred to other regions. The specific Austrian framework conditions would of course have to be adapted depending on the region.
