The first heating project using hydrogen in Poland
About this good practice
The reasons to start the project were: the inevitable energy transformation of regions, shrinking global resources of fossil fuels and financial aspects (e.g. green energy is free from environmental costs, carbon dioxide emission fees or taxation of energy carriers depending on the so-called environmental efficiency). The project will be implemented in two stages and will include the construction of facilities, installations and infrastructure necessary to make the energy transformation reality; this will include the construction of photovoltaic farms, energy storage facilities, electrolysers for the hydrogen electrolysis process, heat sources, hydrogen refuelling stations and installations for the production of organic fertilizers and biomethane. The most important activities already carried out: establishment of the local government hydrogen company HydroSanok and implementation of a feasibility study of the project aimed at determining the strengths and weaknesses of the project and its potential threats. Stakeholders and beneficiaries: The city of Sanok and its subordinate institutions, including educational, medical, public and private transport units, as well as the city residents themselves.
Resources needed
Estimated value: approx. 332 431 EUR. The project is co-financed from own funds and funds of the capital partner. Proper phase co-financed from EU funds. Human resources: the know-how project partner - Hynfra JSC experts, Sanok Public Utilities Company LLC and HydroSanok LLC, Sanok City Hall staff
Evidence of success
The project aims at: achieving comprehensive energy transformation, making Sanok a zero emission city (City 4.0 - green, sustainable, innovative), increasing the production of electricity from renewable energy sources and green hydrogen, lowering utility fees (for electricity, heating) for residents, developing of zero-emission public transport and creating a "green" industrial zone.
Potential for learning or transfer
The practice will significantly contribute to: achieving energy independence of the city of Sanok, zero energy emissions and green energy production. It will prevent fluctuations in energy prices and will ensure energy stability of the city of Sanok and the surrounding communes. The project implementation will contribute to the promotion and acceleration of activities aimed at increasing the share of green energy and renewable energy sources in the overall energy consumption of the Podkapackie Region.
The creation of a green zone will attract investors from innovative areas of the economy
The project will contribute to staff training in new industries related to renewable energy, including practical training in the field of hydrogen technologies usage and mnagement.
