The restrictions caused by the Covid pandemic (visitor contingents, restricted opening times, hygiene concepts) require a rethink and accelerate digitization processes.
"Kloster Virtuell" goes beyond a normal 360-degree tour. The 3D room conveys a more intensive visitor experience. The numerous expert videos enrich and complete the offer.
The beneficiaries include school classes who can use the virtual museum as an extracurricular learning space in their own classroom. Under the aspect of accessibility, people can now visit the museum who cannot enter certain areas of the building due to stairs and thresholds and who cannot use the museum's offers. Furthermore, the virtual offer in cultural tourism can be used as a supraregional or international advertising medium.
Resources needed
The Covid pandemic led to event cancellations so that own funds could be used elsewhere. The 3D scan and the film production run into a low five-digit amount of money.
Evidence of success
The Michaelstein Monastery Museum is highly dependent on tourism in the Harz Mountains. The good number of visitors in summer contrasts with low numbers in winter. About 7000 visitors could be booked through the Kloster Virtuell since December, 4th. That corresponds to about a third of the visitors for a normal year as a whole. Potential for learning or transfer
The virtual museum can easily be transferred to any large, medium or small museum. So-called tag points can be used to provide information in text, images and video. Individual areas can be covered with fonts in order to give a quick overview on the floor plans. The tag points can be created in different colors in order to also visually indicate to the users what form of information is available. With the 3D scan, it is up to the museum to decide how high the financial expenses should be.
