About this good practice
Groups of young people residing in the Municipality, and in their free time, participate in waste removal activities, cleaning and maintenance of beaches, streets, gardens and urban vegetable gardens.These activities by the removal of waste, contribute to the prevention of pollution, in beaches, water lines, green spaces and the sea. All young people receive training and awareness-raising actions on good environmental practices and aim to be public awareness agents in the places where they carry out the activities. About 800 young people participate during the summer months and a team of 9 young people daily during the year. This project has been implemented continuously in the municipality since 1992. All participants receive economic compensation for the tasks performed, as well as a transport subsidy and personal accident insurance.
Resources needed
Annual investment of around €230,000.
Human Resources - Summer campaign: 3 technicians and 50 monitors for the 800 young participants . Annual campaign - 1 technician, 1 monitor and a daily team of 8 young people.
Materials: Manual cleaning equipment for sreets, clothing for protection .
Evidence of success
- Engagement of 800 young people, in free time, in active environmental citizenship activities: remove waste from public spaces. They set an example of good practice for citizens by taking care of their territory.
- Acquisition of new knowledge of environmental education. 92% of the participants shown that they knew the rules for separating waste and 84% correctly indicated in which new materials the waste can be tranformed after recycling.
- Easy replication of the project.
Potential for learning or transfer
This type of initiative is already implemented in other municipalities in the country and is easily replicable, requiring human resources with a profile to coordinate groups of young people, raise environmental awareness and organize materials to support activities.
