Basic Start Your Own Business Course for Ukrainians.
About this good practice
This is a collaborative ‘Start Your Own Business’ programme for Ukrainian individuals coming to Carlow/Ireland who wish to start their own business. It addresses issues such as language barriers, social inclusion, Irish culture, Irish business law and regulations, lack of finance, underutilisation of prior skills and business background.
Participants are fully informed of all the local agencies providing business and funding services that they may be eligible for. This tailored course design is translated to Ukrainian to ensure that all participants have the opportunity to generate ideas for potential business opportunities here in Carlow. LEO addresses each group to build a relationship for future engagement, as well as providing funding. Many participants are referred to the raft of supports that LEO offer. Carlow Development provide translation, tutors, follow-up supports including one to ones, signposting/referrals, and IT access.
Potential participants for this programme are engaged through targeting messaging/social media, referrals to our services and Carlow Development Ukrainian support workers.
Resources needed
The project is supported by LEO & SICAP Staff. LEO supports small businesses in Ireland with 31 local offices. SICAP tackles poverty and social exclusion nationally through community activation programs.
Evidence of success
33 participants have completed to date. This offer valuable education, mentorship, and networking opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs. Participants gain essential skills, receive guidance from experienced mentors, and connect with peers and potential partners. These programs provide access to resources such as funding and legal advice, helping mitigate risks associated with starting a business.

This programme is a model of best collaborative practice suitable for upscaling and dissemination. It provides key learning on delivering a focussed and creative approach to fostering entrepreneurship and economic and social inclusion through,
