About this good practice
Centro Region of Portugal was classified by the Joint Research Centre* as an “intermediary R&I region” for having a high level of R&D intensity combined with a high ESIF dependence and a low capacity to capture H2020 funding.
Acknowledging the importance and need to support the internationalisation process of regional stakeholders, CCDRC has been developing a roadmap for the internationalisation of R&D&I, composed by a set of different initiatives (some of them already existing) that aims at increasing the regional presence at European and international level.
One of the initiatives included in this roadmap is “Boletim Europa” – a weekly kind of newsletter that provides information about open calls from the main programmes managed at European level. It was seen as an important element to support stakeholders navigating the complex European landscape, since the information available is well spread and sometimes not easy to find and access – especially for entities that do not have an office dedicated to this task.
“Boletim Europa” is made available online for public (and free) access. The main beneficiaries of this practice are all the regional (and national) stakeholders (such as companies, universities or research and technological centres) that have an interest in applying for European calls and/or initiatives.
*On the technical report, Mobilising European Structural and Investment Funds and Horizon 2020 in support of innovation in less developed regions.

Resources needed
No financial resources were required to set up “Boletim Europa”. This initiative relies only on human resources.
In Centro, one human resource is needed to set up and run this practice – once a week the information is gathered from the different sources and updated in the portal.

Evidence of success
Boletim Europa allows regional stakeholders to have an easy access to relevant information that is usually spread throughout the websites of the different European programmes. Although results cannot be directly connected to “Boletim Europa”, Centro’s participation in the European Research and Innovation Programme has definitely improved from FP7 to H2020: from 486 to 557 participations; from 112M€ to 178M€ of net EU contribution. Up to now we have registered more than 49.000 visits to the page.
Potential for learning or transfer
As this weekly newsletter is a rather simple tool that does not require any financial resources and it is only dependent of the information available online it is easy to be replicated by any other European region. To replicate this very easy-to-do practice all that is needed is availability of a human resource able to include this task among others and use this approach as a basis/inspiration for the tool to be developed.
Also, this initiative is not only useful for regional stakeholders (to keep updated) but also to policy makers that through this bulletin have a chance to become more familiar with European programmes.
For countries like Portugal in which European programmes’ contact points are at national level the existence of a tool managed by a regional entity closer to stakeholders has proven to be fruitful.
