About this good practice
CEDEX, a leading public body applied to civil engineering, building and the environment, has created an interactive catalogue based on a study on waste that can be used in construction.
The Catalogue has been produced within the framework of a collaboration agreement between the Directorate General for Environmental Quality and Assessment and the Natural Environment and the Centre for Public Works Studies and Experimentation (CEDEX).
The application allows to choose the type of waste generated to be used (ash from biomass, blast furnace slag, phosphogypsum, sewage sludge, tyres, pavement recycling, construction and demolition waste or ornamental stone among others) and its possible application in construction, public works, roads or as filler. It also filters by autonomous community and province within Spain.
Once a type of waste is selected, the application provides information about its origin, volume and distribution in Spain, as well as its recovery (including the necessary processes and machinery), possible applications and works carried out with this material. In addition, it also provides information on environmental considerations, economic aspects and existing regulations linked to this type of waste. Depending on the waste, there are national regulations that control their use, while for others, in the absence of Spanish regulations, international standards are cited, which can be consulted.
At the end it provides references and other contact entities.

Evidence of success
The number of people accessing this catalogue cannot currently be quantified.
Waste applications focused on construction can be found such as the case of recycled aggregate from concrete applied to building and public works, there are cases where it has been used for both structural and non-structural concrete. For example, the Marina Seca Bridge at Barcelona's Forum 2004. Another application is the cable-stayed bridge over the river Turia in Valencia.

Potential for learning or transfer
The aim of this application is to provide a web tool/catalogue that allows a wider dissemination of information, facilitating access to any interested person to the different potentially usable materials, the volumes produced and recycled, as well as the main destination applications, regulations, etc. Anyone can access this website in order to find waste applications focused on construction.
This is an alternative approach to raise awareness of different procedures for reusing materials and their application in other regions of Spain.
In addition, the catalogue also refers to practices with reused materials in other countries such as: the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany, Denmark and Japan.
