Clean-Way GIS system: from Construction Waste to Raw Material
About this good practice
This is an on-line interactive map-based application, which connects demolition or construction waste producers with builders in Hungary. It targets public and private property developers. The database currently includes 510 construction projects, 690 reuse locations and 324 contaminated areas. Since its start the system helped reusing 35,811 tons of construction waste.
The system has an intuitive and easy-to-use map-based graphical user interface. Construction projects are indicated by map-based signs. Clicking on them the users can learn about the amount and type of available waste and the contact details of the responsible construction manager.
The award-winning software uses standard components and thus it is easy to deploy in other countries also. By diverting large amounts of construction waste from landfills and saving 50% on transport costs it contributes to annual savings of EUR 70 million.
Resources needed
- IT infrastructure (server, telecommunication, GIS software components etc.)
- IT personnel (programming and development)
- Financial management (invoicing etc.)
Evidence of success
The system has contributed to annual savings of EUR 70 million and
50% saving on transport costs and CO2 emissions.
It has won several awards: Digital Cities Innovation Competition winner, GreenNovation Golden Prize, T-Systems award.
Potential for learning or transfer
The system is based on standard software components, which makes it possible to transfer to other locations or countries. Although similar systems exist in other countries also, this system excels in its high impact on waste reduction and cost saving. Probably this is because of the user-friendly user interface and the clear business case for both waste producers and those that look for raw materials. Transfer is also made easier through the developer's partnership (and disctinction) with T-Systems, which is active in a number of European countries.
