About this good practice
Ecological waste landfill Albota is part of the Integrated Waste Management System in Argeş County (3 transfer stations in the county: Costesti, Campulung and Curtea de Arges and an Integrated Waste Management Center at Albota.) The main materials collected, sorted, packed and recovered are: municipal waste, paper, cardboard, plastic (PET, foil, other plastics etc.), non-hazardous mechanical wastes (wastes from the mechanical treatment of wastes containing non-hazardous substances), glass.
Compost station features:
- Composting platform capacity: 20,000 t / year (70 t / day)
- Concrete platform for storage of organic waste for cutting and shredding 440 m2;
- Composting platforms – total area: 5,320 m2;
- Compost material storage platform 1,260 m2;
- Concrete tank 300 m3 for storage of irrigation water required for composting and leachate.
Organic waste is shredded and non-biodegradable items are removed. Compost heaps are humidified, aerated and covered with a membrane to retain moisture and heat, thus speeding up the aerobic digestion process. Mature compost is sieved, and non-degraded bits are integrated in new heaps. By upgrading the initial installation, composting time was reduced considerably.
Compost is used in agriculture and as a material for closing the cells of the landfill.
The main stakeholders are county residents, enterprises, public administration- Arges County Council.

Evidence of success
The amount of compost produced on the platform has increased constantly, starting from 0 in 2011, and has more than tripled from 3,606.68 t in 2016 to 11,952.80 t in 2017.
Amount of compost produced from biowaste in 2018: 18,827.8 t

Potential for learning or transfer
This good practice could be applied with good results by municipalities. It’s a good example for:
- promoting the selective collection of recyclable and biodegradable waste in order to reduce the amount of landfilled waste and to achieve waste recycling targets in line with national and EU requirements;
- rehabilitation of non-compliant landfills in order to protect the environment and improve the health of the population
- obtaining compost from organic waste.
