About this good practice
This cooperation program is one of the lines of the ‘ProfESIonalizate’ program launched by the School of Computer Science (University of Castilla-La Mancha, UCLM) located at Ciudad Real. The main objective is that the participant companies, mainly SMEs, characterize professional profiles so that future graduates adjust better to the regional labor market. These agreements allow companies to choose a student and select optional subjects to train the desired professional. Participating companies offer students the possibility of an internship in the company to strengthen the specific training. In this context, students can also write their dissertations in line with the necessities of the company. It could be cataloged as an open educational bridge between research and industry. Thanks to the many ICT projects arising from this initiative the regional ICT industry has grown considerably, the numerous innovativeness solutions have increased their competitiveness and the regional excellence which can help to its integration into the global value chains. Furthermore, this collaborative environment brings the opportunity to generate potential clusters facing up regional challenges. Therefore, this program offers a perfect scenario to promote employability, transfer knowledge, generate innovation and encourage young entrepreneurship spirit.
Resources needed
It is funded through the UCLM public funds, approx. 30,000 € per program/year. This includes the cost of one person for management, event organization, equipment, and certifications. Some companies may optionally pay scholarships to the student (between 300-600 € per month).
Evidence of success
The initiative has had exponential participation which impacts in the ICT projects developed. The first edition 2014 participated 16 students and 7 companies and, in the last call 2019 participated 46 students and 17 companies. Since its creation, a total of 201 ICT innovative projects has been developed, the main outputs were: 65% improved the R&D process (KETs, IoT…), 20% basic research and 15% new products or services. 80% of the students were hired by the companies when the program finished.
Potential for learning or transfer
This initiative is a clear example of how acting in a very local context, is possible to enhance the cooperation between academia and industry to improve sustainable regional growth. This initiative was established in close collaboration using public and private funds which impulse the regional quadruple helix actors into a continuous improvement year by year. This initiative empowers regional strengths, industrial competitiveness, and science excellence thanks to the development of innovative ICT projects. The outputs obtained by the successful projects can inspire the regional government to orientate the regional strategics and to elaborate new policy instruments that promote its further projection. On the other hand, this initiative increases qualified employment and retain talent in the city. Hence, it is a very useful tool to encourage regional policymakers to intensify cooperative policy instruments seeking to promote collaborative research and clusterization processes.
