About this good practice
Consorzio Tutela IGT Valle Camonica was established in 2004, after the recognition of Valle Camonica wines as IGT (registered designation of origin). It is a non-profit inter-professional association aimed at the recovery, protection and valorisation of the wine sector in the valley, and to the general care of the interests related to the denominations of origin of the wines. When the network was constituted, the valley viticulture was in danger of complete abandonment. Over time, thanks to the will of Vineries and operators, together with the support of the Comunità Montana di Vallecamonica, the Province of Brescia and the Centro Vitivinicolo Provinciale, there has been a progressive recovery of viticulture. Over the years, the vineyard eradication has been completely stopped and new wineries asked for replanting rights. This process is leading to growing investments on the territory, aimed at valorising hidden corners of the valley and at overcoming the difficulties related to the particular morphologies in which vineyards are placed. Ancient agricultural land terracing has been recovered, and some of the elements of the traditional Camuni landscape have been restored and valorized, even through the use of innovative land management approaches and the experimentation of new integrative activities in cooperation with other local agri-food sectors.
The Consortium supports the conomy development by investing on the local wine promotion (event organization, flyering).

Resources needed
First financial resources (about 3000 euro) were provided by Comunità Montana and each of the three initial founders contributed with 300 euro.
Actually, each winery company contributes proportionally to its annual wine production and the Comunità Montana annually supports the Consortium with 5000.

Evidence of success
Established at the will of 3 farms in the valley, it currently represents 9 of the 21 wineries in Valle Camonica, covering 76% of the total valley surface dedicated to viticulture. The number of producers in the network has consistently grown over the last years.
Potential for learning or transfer
Sharing common goals helped to strengthen the identity and operational capacity of the members of the network and of the network itself;
- the promotion of the identity of the network as a group of high-quality wineries and certified productions is an important element in building legitimacy and affirmation of the network itself;
- collaboration among operators contributes to strengthening the capacity to face common challenges;
- the small size of the businesses members can be a limit for the development of the network, but the support of Institutions and Research bodies can represent and important support to achieve long-term important goals;
- local fragmentation has been partially overcome through the building of a network.
