This is the good practice's implementation level. It can be national, regional or local.
About this good practice
The idea to develop services to forest companies, forest owners and public users came about when the company HIAB opened their innovation/ research laboratories to students in a hackathon. They had to come up with new ideas how to use a crane on a truck and the information how this equipment could be used for. Research institutes, SME companies and suppliers where invited to participate in developing the best suggestions into products and services. Each project that the management thought was valuable was given a project leader from the company and then the development and implementation started. It took approximately a year to get the first prototypes into the market. In 2019 the Hudiksvall Hydraulic cluster is utilising different hydraulic companies test fascilities to provide services to their members which are mainly SME companies. The cluster is supported publicly, by the municipality of Hudiksvall, the region of Gävleborg and ERDF in north middle Sweden This is a good example of how private initative can become a public value, when companies and public organisations cooperate. Now it is possible for researcher from universities and companies in the hydraulic cluster of Hudiksvall to utilize these resources and competences and to further develop other industries in the area.
Resources needed
The resources where the facilities and the competence of how the cranes and machinery works came from the company. The public financing to the Hudiksvall Hydraulic cluster ha been during 2019 approximately 200 000 Euro.
Evidence of success
New products and ideas were developed from the student’s participation. Two ideas are commercialized products. Hudiksvall Hydraulic cluster is now a strong actor and partner to Mid Sweden University development and Linköping univ due to their open approach to innovation and cooperation regarding new ideas and services. Eventually there will be a more established research and innovation platform for advanced manufacturing in the region
Potential for learning or transfer
The learning from this practice is that it is very good when leading companies take initiative to “open up” their research facilities to other cluster members and to public organisation and when they cooperate with surrounding researcher and SME. There is a huge potential in learning from this and at the same time add even more value if SME and students can be supported interacting and working in this KETS environment. The information about this good practice is best transferred by study visits from other companies and regions and discussion about how this experience could be modified in similar manner in another regions
