Dino Park: a family-oriented attraction useful to spread tourists out from city centres

About this good practice
Dino Parc Râșnov is Southeast Europe’s largest dinosaur park and an open-air museum. It is located near Brașov, Romania and provides an engaging experience for families, featuring life-sized dinosaur models and various interactive attractions, making it a popular destination in the region. Dino Parc Râșnov was established to diversify the local tourism offering, particularly for families with children, in the Brașov Metropolitan Area. Before its launch, the area surrounding Brasov lacked of attractions for younger visitors, leading families with kids to seek entertainment mostly in the nearby cities, such as Brasov, occasionally determining very crowded weekends. The park uses over 120 scientifically accurate dinosaur models created to the latest paleontological standards, along with playgrounds, a 9D cinema, adventure trails, and various interactive exhibits. Initiated by a private investor with support from European funds and local authorities, Dino Parc Râșnov has become a key destination, offering educational and recreational experiences while helping to distribute tourist visits more evenly in the region and therefore promoting a more balanced tourism development throughout the entire region.
Resources needed
The park was funded through a 50% grant from the Regional Operational Program, with the remaining 50% provided by private investment. The land, provided by local authorities for a 49-year lease, enabled the successful establishment of the attraction.
Evidence of success
Dino Parc Râșnov has drawn significant tourist interest, providing a family-friendly option and helping to prevent nearby cities to become too crowded. It has also stimulated the local economy by attracting visitors to other nearby attractions, such as the Râșnov Citadel and Valea Cetății cave.
Potential for learning or transfer
Dino Parc Râșnov’s success highlights the value of creating unique, family-oriented educational and recreational experiences in helping to distribute tourist visits more evenly in a region and therefore promoting a more balanced tourism development throughout the entire region. When potentially replicating such an initiative, key factors for successful transfer include support from local authorities, unique attractions, and proximity to well-known tourist areas. This model can be replicated in other regions aiming to diversify their tourism offerings and distribute tourist flow more effectively across a certain region.
