About this good practice
Two days after the big earthquake had hit the city of Zagreb firends called Viktor Sarić, the owner of VitjaFilms studio, to shoot the state of their roofs with his drone. The destruction of chimneys and roof tiles was much heavier than everyone thought and danger of objects falling from roofs was very high. The biggest concern was that dangereous buildings were not propely marked in the streets and magnitude of devestation was much fiercer than everyone thought. The biggest problem was that the roofs of old, historic buildings were inaccessible and dangerous to climb for checking their roofs and all the damage. The building owners and representatives were able to react and save their flats at higher floors and keep people out of danger in the streets. When the owners needed a drone inspection, VitjaFilms Studio volunteered to shoot it free of charge. Thus they shot around 120 videos free of charge.
Resources needed
1 person, 1 drone, 1 computer, 1 car, 1 wifi router (internet to go), 1 smartphone to send all the videos after they are produced, and some good will.
Evidence of success
Nova tv, 101 radio, N1 television, Jutarnji list 3 video published, Jutarnji list interview -https://www.jutarnji.hr/vijesti/hrvatska/gradanima-besplatno-svojim-dronom-snima-krovove-ostecene-u-potresu-dosad-sam-snimio-stotinjak-objekata-pozivi-ne-prestaju-10174924. 120 video shots produced, all free of charge for the citizens. The dangerous roofs, i.e. buildings were properly marked and, hence, repaired timely.
Potential for learning or transfer
Drone can be a helpful tool to help in crises like these ones. There should be more individuals - volunteers who can react fast and scan the dangerous spots. This example caused a strong citizen acceptance of drones as useful technology: it saved people from climbing dangerous roofs, took very precise, detailed photos / videos of the damage, and, since VitjaFilms Studio did all that free of charge, the citizens were thrilled and grateful.
