Fish and animal food from organic waste

This is the good practice's implementation level. It can be national, regional or local.
About this good practice
One of the problems addressed with the good practice is the constantly growing fish and meat consumption in Bulgaria and internationally. However, current protein production practices for fish animal food are not sustainable.
The second problem relates to pet food ingredients. The conventional ingredients used by the pet food industry are not environmentally friendly.
The practice demonstrates protein production based on processing of organic food waste by insects - Black Soldier Fly. Insects reproduce fast and are very efficient in gaining body mass, thus minimizing protein production costs. Specifically, an adult female of the insect of choice, the Black Soldier fly can lay up to 1000 eggs. During its lifecycle, the fly feeds only in its larval form, which means that the adult flies are not potential carriers of diseases and do not require particular care. In less than two weeks, insects can convert 60% of organic waste into proteins, lipids and other useful substances in a local loop. After hatching the larvae feed voraciously, converting waste into protein and lipid-rich body mass. The BSF larvae reach maturity in only 12 days during which time they increase their weight 9000 times.
The insect protein is a hypoallergenic alternative to cereal or meat-based diet.
Insects are an efficient solution, research shows that insect-based protein meals can partially or completely substitute existing feed stock.

Resources needed
Nasekomo Ltd is a start – up company and employees 20 people - entrepreneurs, scientists and experts. Initial phase was funded by the company founders’ capital. For the further development it is aiming to receive funds from venture funds supported by the innovation public support programs - € 3 mil
Evidence of success
Nasekomo is an example of innovation, sustainable business and a circular economy. In the European market the demand for this product is high, as it is a good substitute for traditional proteins that are imported into Europe and whose production depletes natural resources. The company was awarded in Bulgaria for socially responsible business, by the French-Bulgarian CCI for innovation, and in 2019, it won a participation in an accelerator program that supports green companies.
Potential for learning or transfer
The presented good practice is a good example of development of innovative CE model in the food chain sector. The food industry generates an extremely large amount of organic waste, which is used by the technology of the presented good practice, which leads to a reduction of organic waste and the release of harmful methane into the atmosphere. It is applicable in other regions, as the raw materials used are available everywhere and production lines can be installed in different places.
