About this good practice
The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (n.31/2010) sets new energy efficiency requirements for new constructions. This usually means reduction of energy consumption for winter heating in Northern European Regions and for summer cooling in Southern European Regions. The problem addressed by the described practice is related to its specific location in southern Italy whit cold winters and hot summers. In such conditions the technical challenge is the definition of the optimal combination of solutions to solve both problems and reach the EPBD requirements. The practise has foreseen the construction of a Nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) based on innovative design strategies to reduce the energy needs in its specific climatic context. A detailed study of the building orientation and shape to optimize solar radiation, the use of high performance materials for the structure and the envelope and specific screening solutions have contributed to the reduction of thermal loads.
The integration of Renewable Energy Sources and of the Internet of Things (IoT) technology allowed the innovative Building Management System (BMS) to control all the equipment installed in the nZEB so to reach high levels of Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ). The main beneficiary where the associated entities of STRESS (research organization, engineering firms and private companies) and its results will support public administrations, researchers, professional orders and individuals.

Resources needed
The financial resources used for the development of the practice included Direct costs for € 180.000 and Personnel Costs for around € 300.000. The human resource required for the activities where 15 researchers from the different involved entities.
Evidence of success
The standards technical solutions for the specific climate do not have a shared codification and are not supported by experimental studies. Therefore the nZEB demonstrator has an intrinsic value being a significant experimental experience, unpublished for Southern Italy, of the effectiveness of the solutions. The evidence of success is archived in the BMS database where data related to energy consumption and production show that the aimed nZEB standard is obtainable for the specific climate.
Potential for learning or transfer
The nZEB building represents an example of integrated solution for the internal zones of the Mediterranean countries characterized by very hot summers and cold winters.
Being one of the first applications its results are to be taken as a reference for future experimental applications and, at the same time, should be disseminated to construction companies and practitioners.
All the other EU or Italian regions with similar climatic conditions could take advantage of the proposed set of solutions integrating them in guidelines and regulations for their energy efficiency policies.
The nZEB building itself is a research result and represents the main transfer media for its integrated solutions. Information transfer events have already taken place in Benevento (Campania Region NUTS 2: ITF3) and involved the Campania Region local government.
