Innovative trains equipment
About this good practice
The pandemic effects on trust for public services such as train transportation have been strong. During the two-year period of travel restrictions and other precautions to limit the viral diffusion, Abruzzo Region has stimulated increased efforts by its rail service providers. Now TUA, one of those, invested in that area and is able to offer a new travel experience that can embed both tools such as passenger count system and defibrillators on board. Such combination can prevent overcrowded trains and offers a life-saving tool on board which can make the difference to passengers. Both measures can ensure enhanced safety and security fot the train travel experience.
Resources needed
The total cost is 40 mln euros. Funding was entirely provided by TUA Company, which is a public Company.
Evidence of success
As evidence of success, the total equipped trains ("treno cardioprotetto") funded by this Good Practice were 9 in 2022 and 3 more before June 2023.
As sanitary prevention measure, at the moment there was no need of use of the semi-automatic defibrillators onboard, but there is an increased capacity that make it safer and healthier to travel on the whole railway network, because of a faster response rate in terms of emergency first aid with the crucial timing, thanks to such equipments.
Potential for learning or transfer
Investment in innovation is also related to health features that can be implemented on transport services. The choice to put tools like passenger count systems and semi-automatic defibrillators can be a key success factor for rail service providers, but in the long run, that good practice can contribute to set new standards and requirements for future service tenders by Regional administration.
