Interactive Map of the Aspres Territory
About this good practice
Visitors come to the territory because of the well known touristic sites such as Caves BYRRH and Castenou’s castle but they tend to leave afterward and not visit the rest of the territory which is less known and deemed uninteresting. Visitors also tend to chose a lodging near the sea.
The installation of an interactive map at the tourist office allows visitors to better see the extent of the territory to have images of the different villages (19) get a glimpse of the rich cultural and gastronomic heritage, the different trail trek and makes them want to know more and see for themselves. Some people then booked guided tours of one or more of the villages.
The main beneficiaries of this practice are the tourist office with the increase in booking for guided tours of the villages but also the restaurants, accommodation providers and lesser-known cultural sites.
Resources needed
The interactive map cost a total of 28981 euros including tax. It was made and designed by the company Anagram. The project was financed by the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) (64%), the Community of Communes Aspres Thuir (16%) and the tourist office Aspres Thuir (20%).
Evidence of success
Since the interactive map was installed in 2021 at the tourist office, there's been an increase in the number of visitors taking part in guided tours of the villages. 269 people in 2021, 302 in 2022 and 350 in 2023. There’s also a sharp increase of interest for the hikes proposed thanks to the interactive map. For example in 2022 the most visited hike ‘Roc de Majorca” had 458 visitors registered then in 2023 the number more than doubled with 1174 visitors. We also see more overnight stays.
Potential for learning or transfer
This practice could be useful to other regions who, like the Aspres, have beautiful landscapes, rich cultural heritage but are only known for their main tourist attractions. It is a tool for organisation to put forward their own offers. This can also be a tool to have more people remaining or dwelling so consume in the area. It 's also very ludic and it pleases all generations of visitors. This should be installed in tourist offices, information points in the area or the most visited sites to have the most number of users.
