About this good practice
A Joint Research Unit is a structure, which is set up by different higher education and research institutions (both public and private) by pooling human resources and equipment based on a joint strategy and common scientific project.
Joint Research Units responds to the need for fostering the promotion of the relationships between the market and the research field in order to develop together high impact Research and Development lines, attract new lines of research to Galicia and to encourage transfer of results. Concretely in the field of health, by promoting lines such as ICT technological development or eHealth, to improve the patient empowerment mainly elderly and facilitate the work of health professionals.
The Joint Research Unit needs to be comprised by one research organization from Galicia and one company, or two as a maximum. They need to be active at least for 3 years, the expected output after three years is that the JRU operates independently with no needed of funding.
The minimum expenditure eligible for subsidy is 2M€, it is required that the company has a minimum participation of 40% of the total budget, the research centre should has a minimum participation of 10% of the total budget of the Joint Research Unit.
The Research organization (technology centre, university, biomedical foundation..) will receive the grant from GAIN, nevertheless all the members of the Joint Unit will be benefit from the results generated during the development of the activities.

Evidence of success
Three Joint Research Units were granted in the field of health:
-The use of ICT technologies in the field of Health was addressed in the eHealth Joint Knowledge Centre (2014), such as SaludeI, a platform based on mobile technology.
-Other two between pharma and both University and hospital. The first aims to co-develop new medicines to treat chronic pain optimizing research process to ensure transfer of knowledge and the second is working in the Liquid Biopsy, nano-oncology and modeling lines.

Potential for learning or transfer
This good practice can inspire public authorities in need of accelerating the development of innovative solutions which improve the quality of life of citizens. Joint Research Units enhance research groups and foster synergies among the research organizations and companies. The joint working groups aim to become catalysts of development of research and development which have to be in accordance with the priorities of the Galician Smart Specialization Strategy, both researchers and companies collaborate directly in Research and development activities together with their knowledge and own resources.
Investors and companies involved are benefited by having the opportunity to know in depth how the other party deals with research:
- For the research group, it is a great opportunity to test their ideas first and then their prototypes and/or results.
- For the company, it is the perfect chance to know the unmet medical needs of their areas of interest.
