Open village Day
About this good practice
Rural areas and industrial communities have undergone significant structural changes in recent decades. The changes have affected not only to primary production but also to industrial manufacturing.
The structural changes in the area have resulted in the concentration of services, population decline, unemployment, and an increase in segregation. Additionally, the structural changes affect people´s confidence in the future and may cause a sense of hopelessness and resistance on change.
The aim of “Open Village Day” event is to tackle the structural changes faced by rural areas and small industrial towns and communities. It aims to strengthen local identity and showcase the areas as attractive locations for living and working. Through these events, the voices of “decline areas” can be heard, reinforcing the message that these areas also offer excellent conditions for good life.
The Event is organized nationally. Regional organizations, such as the Regional Villages Associations, encourage local villages and communities to organize local events and support organizers. The regional level also contributes to the marketing of the event.
The beneficiaries include residents, who can strengthen their sense of belonging and local identity, as well as visitors. The event enables the marketing of the areas as residential, working and business environments.
The Open Village Day also strengthens social capital. Increased social capital is reflected in the growth of resiliency.
Resources needed
The national budget is approximately €6000-€8000. At the regional level, coordinators' labor costs are estimated to cover approximately one week's work. At the local level, the work is primarily voluntary. Potential sponsors can offer additional resources, such as free radio commercial campaigns.
Evidence of success
The event has been organized for 10 years. It is easy to get local organizers involved in the event. The event attracts over 150,000 visitors annually and includes more than 600 local events. In 2023, there were 630 events. At the regional level in Päijät-Häme, there are approximately 30 local events with around 8,000 visitors.
