This is the good practice's implementation level. It can be national, regional or local.
About this good practice
Platio is a modular paving system (suitable to pave streets, city squares, gardens, pathways etc.) made out of recycled/reused plastic. This plastic paving element is capable to carry the weight of cars and trucks and optionally can be equipped with solar energy producing covers which can save or provide electricity for use.
Car industry is producing large quantities of scrap plastic car parts. These parts are being thrown out and they are usually collected by companies specialized in this area. Sometimes the quantity of the scrap plastic material is relatively small and not suitable for recycling due to economical reasons. In their project, called Platio, they use this small quantity plastic scrap to manufacture paving elements after sorting and grinding. The automotive industrial plastic waste is a high quality building material and perfectly suitable to make pavings with.

Resources needed
During the manufacture of the pilot projects 1.4 tons of plastic waste was recycled from car production waste (lamps, bumpers). 90 % of recycled plastics come from technology waste (scrap material) of Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic.
Evidence of success
Since this company practically uses high quality plastic waste, the material costs are low but the quality of the products is high. Producing these paving elements with this method results in competitive prices which is a key of being a sustainable good practice.
Potential for learning or transfer
New competitive product out of scrap materials - this is a great synergy combining plastic waste, spatial planning, circular economy and eco-design. In the future even more circular product could be developed:
other possible waste plastic materials could be integrated in the process. In addition to that, the company is also working on a solution that allows the recycling of the products after reaching their end of life: so that they can be used in other areas of building industry, for example as an additive to stabilize after a grinding process.
