Playa Pallet
About this good practice
Playa Pallet is a wooden beach bin made out of recycled materials. We launched this project in 2018 with the aim to create a community who is concerned about the beach free of marine litter and who see the real problem in the coasts of the beaches. Playa Pallets are placed all over the island of Fuerteventura to nudge and motivate people to do beach cleanings daily.
In collaboration with the municipality, we use as a tool to communicate the location of our Playa pallets in “Surfermap” which is a platform that shows where the bins are located. Therefore, it is even easy to find!
When picking up the trash on the beach we ensure and prevent the litter from washing back into the ocean, entangling wildlife, and breaking into microplastics.
Playa Pallet it is an easy system that anyone can participate 24/7. How does it work?
• Check the map to see the locations of the Playa Pallets.
• Put the trash you picked up during your walk in the pallet.
• The trash will be picked up regularly by local authorities.
Resources needed
Playa Pallets are made of recycling materials with the responsibility to install them, and through our website it is possible to fill with debris or if it is needed a maintenance to be repaired. All debris is collected and taking to the recycling area by the municipality in collaboration with us.
Evidence of success
Currently, we have around 38 playa pallets on the island filling up with ocean debris on a daily basis. Different countries contact us interested in our idea and spread this project to the world.
For the last 20 years, different clean ups have been met worldwide by Clean Ocean Project. The organization has removed tons of trash from beaches all over Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and other countries.
Potential for learning or transfer
Playa pallet initiative has a significant potential to be easily applied in the coastline from any place. We are happy to know that a town, city, organisation… wants to implement our project seeking to implement this 24/7 clean up practice which can be more innovative and motivating since there is no need to organize regular cleaning campaigns.
