About this good practice
This project was an investment the installation of alternative energy systems aimed to help combat the effects of global warming. It involved the installation of renewable energy facilities on Government properties for the generation of green energy. The project will contribute to a reduction in the Maltese Islands' dependency on finite, fossil fuels for energy generation and will also reduce CO2 and other pollutant emissions thereby contributing to climate change mitigation. This will in turn have a positive impact on the quality of life of the people in terms of cleaner air.
The entire PV system consists of four different phases comprising in total 437 PV panels with a total peak power of 108.01 kWp. The annual energy generation in 2017 reached 172, 000 kWh which is equivalent to a reduction of 120,400 kg of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
The PV system consists of a mixture of polycrystalline and monocrystalline PV panels, operated through a net metering arrangement and has a total capacity is 108.10 kWp. The PV system generates between 150,000 and 180,000 kWh annually. The building consumes on average 326 MWh of electricity every year, so the PV system generates roughly 50% of the building’s energy demand.

Resources needed
The first three phases of the PV project (92.41 kWp costing €237,291) were financed directly by the Ministry for Gozo from its local funds. The fourth phase of the PV project (15.60 kWp costing €20,770) and was part-financed by the European Union (85% - 15%).
Evidence of success
The project has helped to partially offset the conventional energy demanded by the Ministry for Gozo, as well as contribute to the achievement of the 10% share of renewable energy target. In addition it has promoted green energy generation among children, employees as well as parents and the residents of the respective localities, as the PV panels proved to be a showcase of environmentally friendly energy generation in Gozo.
Potential for learning or transfer
The project is replicable in other buildings throughout the region. Both in private and in public buildings like this one. Organizations involved learned the financial and reporting methodology required by European programming, making it easier to implement future projects. Finally, the practice can be transferred to other countries, presenting similar needs and solar insolation.
