About this good practice
The International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) is a recently established international intergovernmental research organization created with the aim to become a global center of excellence in applied nanotechnology research, aiming to attract some of the world’s best scientists and engineers. It’s also the first research organization in Europe, with an international legal status, entirely focused in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology.
The INL building was designed for a total staff of 400 people, including Principal Investigators (PIs), staff researchers, visitors, research fellows, PhD students, support engineers and administration support staff. The laboratory provides a high-tech research environment to address major challenges of Nanotechnologies. INLs core strategic nanotechnology and nanoelectronic research activities are applied within the fields of health, renewable energy, ICT, food quality & safety and environmental control sectors.
INL was conceived to assure world class research excellence in all of its activity areas and to:
• Develop partnerships with the industry and foster the transfer of knowledge into economic value and jobs
• Train researchers and contribute to the development of a skilled workforce for the nanotechnology industry
• Attract international companies to the region
• Develop a regional technology transfer system for the service of local industry.

Resources needed
The global investment over 100M€ extends over a total campus area of 47000 m2.
Both the physical infrastructure and the scientific equipment of INL were co-funded by both the governments of Portugal and Spain and the European Commission, through the ERDF and INTERREG Funds.

Evidence of success
The results achieved by INL Good Practices can be shown by the strategic partnerships to promote research and innovation through the development and commercialization of the results and exchange of know-how. By the end of 2017, INL had achieved:600 publications and institutional H-INDEX of 37; 16 Patents Applications; 23 EU Funded Projects, 44 National Funded Projects and 12 Interregional Funded Projects; Public and Private Funded RTD Contracts ongoing with 40 Companies and 4 Startups incubated.
Potential for learning or transfer
Due to INL´s business model, structure, research and innovation capacities, we contribute to the consolidation of different types of actors in the Regional Innovation System (companies, universities, RTD centres, incubators, financial institutions and government agencies). INL facilitates the development and uptake of new ideas and transfer them into commercial value to improve industry´s productivity, competitiveness and foster economic growth. Through INL, our partners can easily reach business internationalization. This possibility is unique and works in two directions (technology offers and technology requests). This way, our partners can get access to the most promising technologies. Indeed, we offer a global international market for nanotechnology and KETs. INL actions will turn the cross-border region more attractive in terms of RTD capacity in nanotechnologies, which will increase its RTD and Innovation potential, as well as, contribute to attracting foreign investment.
