This is the good practice's implementation level. It can be national, regional or local.
About this good practice
Childhood is considered a cross cutting priority on mobility matters. Collective support systems of the school allow organizing different mobility, increasing the number of children walk or use the bike and developing a wider social network around the child welfare, that involves security and confidence. The goal of the practice was to create safe route networks for young school pupils to change their transport habits. The promotion of this initiative foster to develop healthier lifestyle, encourages children to socialize and improves the environment and the public space. The Mobility Area of the Council of Valladolid collaborates with stakeholders on setting up each route, as well as in adapting it to the itinerary: mainly introducing the vertical or horizontal signs, new road marks, parameterizing traffic lights or speed limits. The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) and the Municipal Police, as well as the schools, parents and neighborhood associations have an active role in the implementation of the practice. The project promotes different tools that can be used to monitor and follow up what happens on tracks. A key role in the initiative play also so called “friendly shops” - providing firsthand information to children and exercising a social control over the security of some areas of the route.SSR involves a high degree of commitment, not only from school or the council side, but also from social side (families, teachers, associations); from design to implementation
Resources needed
own funds of the Valladolid City Council were involved. Human resources of the City Council, the General Directorate of Traffic of Valladolid, educational centers, teachers, parents and students were necessary in campaigns implementation
Evidence of success
40% of the trips that occur in the city is to go to work or school. More than 50% take place by car being “multi-purpose” trips, in which parents bring their children to school and then continue to work. 3 schools in Valladolid have the SSR fully developed and used by the pupils every day. Short car trips have been drastically reduced thanks to the involvement of more than 200 pupils. Urban configuration of the routes (pedestrian crossings, traffic lights, sidewalks,..) has largely improved.
Potential for learning or transfer
The practice was built as a participatory process under a dynamic group including different stakeholders and entities present in every city and town (e.g. schools and educational communities). Urban improvements’ needed (awareness of black spots, absence of safe zebra crossings, sidewalks without accessibility ...) have been identified. Raising awareness activities in the educational community (dissemination, promotion and communication of the health benefits) have been implemented as well as necessary management measures to control traffic. Similar sustainable mobility practices can be implemented in schools in Europe, especially in cities and towns rising awareness among children about the impact of their behavior on the environment and on their health.
