Support cleaning events promoted by multiple organizations
About this good practice
Events that clean the coastal area are very important to prevent ocean pollution and provides evidence of the main materials discarded incorrectly. This can show the population what the best behaviour to reduce the amount of waste on beaches and oceans.
The main benefits are:
- This events are purposed for reduce waste on the coastline and give aware for reduce waste production and the problems involved with bad disposal
- Both population and municipality benefits with cleaning events like this. And marine environment and coastline are kept clean
- Cleaning events are powered by different organizations that require support with the materials needed for collecting waste
- The municipality collects the bags after the event
- They are meant to cause awareness on population
Resources needed
- Bags for collecting waste. The amount of bags given varies with the number of participants (1 bag /3 people)
- At least a vehicle and a team of three people (one driver and two solid waste workers) is needed for collecting and transport of waste bags to final destination
Evidence of success
Since October 2021 a total of 1333 people were involved in beach cleaning activities in Almada coastline (50-100 participants for activity) and 445 waste bags were collected. Activities were carried out both in urban and peri-urban beaches.
Potential for learning or transfer
This type of events are very important because they raise awareness on the problematic of waste production and littering. They also increase knowledge on waste sorting and foster behaviour changes towards right waste disposal practices.
Almada municipality is starting to develop events for waste cleaning throughout the territory.
We consider this a good practice for municipalities with a large and diverse coastal line such as Almada, characterized by a 13 km coastal line, with urban, peri-urban, and non-urban beaches (around 32).
