About this good practice
In 2009 the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, Department of Environmental Defense, published a tender addressed to Public Hospitals, in order to co-finance building integrated photovoltaic and solar thermal systems.
An action developed in accordance with the activity line "Development of renewable energy: solar energy and bioenergy supply chains” of the ERDF Operational Programme 2007-2013 for Sardinia Region.
The eligible interventions were related to:
a) installation of photovoltaic solar systems grid connected, in which photovoltaic modules are integral parts of the construction elements of the building;
b) installation of solar thermal systems, in which elements constitute an integral part of the building construction and allow a reduction of no less than 30% of the total annual primary energy required for heating system and / or for water heating system, in combination with a photovoltaic system.
Two different projects have been developed in "Brotzu" Hospital, each one related to the realization of PV rooftops in the parking area + a ST system on a building roof.
For each project a monitoring system has been installed, which collects and analyses parameters measured in the PV and ST plants in order to monitor and evaluate their performances.
The main objective of the action is to promote sustainability in Hospitals, integrated PV systems, energy efficiency, and CO2 emission reduction.

Resources needed
Total amount for the intervention (buildings design and construction): € 2.864.000,00 Project 1 + € 2.882.300,00 Project 2 (90% of the total cost has been co-financed by ERDF Operational Programme 2007-2013 for Sardinia Region).

Potential for learning or transfer
Development and diffusion of renewable energy technologies, in order to allow the reduction of environmental pollution in the regional territory, with particular reference to the objectives of CO2 emissions reduction established by the international targets on GHG reduction, the European Union and National standards.
For each project a monitoring system has been installed, which collects and analyses parameters measured in the PV and ST plants in order to monitor and evaluate their performances.
The project is replicable in other public buildings throughout the Region.
The designers involved in the project improved their knowledge in the design of Building integrated PV systems construction, making it easier for them to implement these technologies in future projects.
Main results achieved:
• Solar technologies and their technological trends promoted
• Design, architectural integration and installation skills transferred
• Solar energy consumption increased in public buildings.
