About this good practice
Fratelli Carli is a historical olive oil company founded in 1911; since then, it has been selling goods directly to its customers, by mail order and delivery, right to the door and over the world. Starting from the 2000s, the company also gave life to a retail chain presently including 5 Empori, namely in Imperia, Turin, Milan, Padua and Cuneo.
The company produces and sells olive oil, products preserved in olive oil typical of Liguria as well as of the Mediterranean culinary tradition; gastronomy-products having olive oil as the basic ingredient of their special tastiness. Additionally, there is also a range of wines and cosmetic products.
Fratelli Carli has embarked, with great conviction, on a personal path towards sustainable innovation in the respect of the environment. In 2014, Fratelli Carli became the first Italian manufacturing company recognized as B Corp (Benefit Corporation).
B Corps are for-profit companies certified by the non-profit B Lab (US) to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. The assessment is made through a web-tool named B Impact Assessment. Business scoring over 80/200 con be certified as they are generating value and are optimising the value allocation between multiple stakeholders, the community and the environment.

Resources needed
The B Impact Assessment tool is freely available online with no limitations. In order to state publicly the company score, businesses must pay an annual fee to B Lab, the non-profit organisation based in US that manage the B Corp brand and system.
Evidence of success
Fratelli Carli has obtained the recognition of the best B Corp in the world in the category of companies with more than 250 employees, in terms of environmental protection activities.
In 2016, Fratelli Carli scored 97 in the B Lab’s B Impact Assessment, +7.7% higher than in 2014. Most significant improvements have been registered in the Community and Governance axis of the model.
