About this good practice
The Centre for Value Integration (C4VI) was an initiative implemented by the Barcelona Design Centre with the support of ACCIO - Catalan Agency for Business Competitiveness. The programme promoted the concept of systemic innovation, where design served as a tool for developing solutions that better respond to functional, emotional and social needs. C4VI was targeted at companies, public sector organisations, universities and research centres aiming to start an innovation project. Through a range of training, capacity building and good practices dissemination, C4VI was helping to transform innovation challenges into economic and social value. Topics such as Innovation Strategy, Ethnography, Problem Solving, Product & Service Prototyping, and Global Trends were covered during interactive workshops. The Centre for Value Integration built its offer based on identification of needs and existing assets in the innovation ecosystem. The programme developed good practice case studies of design-driven innovation in Catalan businesses and organised awareness-raising campaign.
Resources needed
The programme was conducted by 5 professional staff of the Barcelona Design Centre and 5 experts were hired for that purpose. The duration of it was for 2 years, costing 100.000€ financially supported by ACCIO, the Catalan Agency for Business Competitiveness of the Government of Catalonia.
Evidence of success
The programme resulted in a total of eleven workshops implemented in different cities mainly those capital of province in Catalonia, and which work sessions were about the above mentioned topics. A total of 240 SMEs and professionals participated and are therefore considered direct beneficiaries having increased its systemic innovation capacity. Additionally, nine methodological tools were developed and four design driven innovation days were placed with a total audience of 300 people.
Potential for learning or transfer
The Centre for Value Integration built its offer based on identification of needs and existing assets in the innovation ecosystem with the direct collaboration of ACCIO the Catalan Agency for Business Competitiveness. The programme aimed at three main goals: firstly, awareness building regarding the importance of design to achieve innovation and competitiveness as a tool for developing solutions that better respond to functional, emotional and social needs; secondly, capacity building for companies and public entities in the field of systemic innovation; and thirdly, developing good practice case studies of design-driven innovation in Catalan businesses. Ultimately, the programme achieved the objectives contained therein and were considered the result of the efforts towards a commitment from the Government of Catalonia to systemic innovation and as a flagship to lead the new European vision and to overcome the innovation gap in one of its regions.
