About this good practice
Nowadays, the rural landscape is affected by radical changes because of the disappearance of traditional houses and their replacement with houses that have nothing in common with local architectural specifics.
Maramures County, one of the most beautiful regions of Romania, is confronting with these challenges and the local authorities and professionals are concerned in preserving and promoting the well-known traditional architectural style of Maramureș.
Maramures County Council, together with the Order of Architects of Romania – North-West Branch, organized an architectural competition for the best traditional housing solutions, specific to historic Maramureș, by providing design services for big and small traditional houses, with all the modern facilities. This initiative has been set up within the initiative ”The Plan for Revitalization of Maramures village through - Typical houses for historical areas of Maramures", with the support of 18 local authorities from rural area of Maramures.
11 projects have been awarded - 5 projects for big houses and 6 projects for small houses, in order to be offered free of charge to interested people from Maramureș and also to national and international investors.
The technical projects are made by architects and highlight the traditional architecture of Maramures with all modern facilities, the result being a traditional heritage home adapted to contemporaneity.

Expert opinion
One of the aims of the European Framework for Action on Cultural Heritage is the regeneration of cities and regions through cultural heritage, including development of pragmatic, sustainable and integrated solutions to urban and regional challenges. Many culturally significant rural areas are losing their traditional character. To save its valuable architectural style, the Maramures County organized a project competition and chose 11 projects for modern houses that are in line with the traditional look of the area. These projects are offered for free and have already received interest from the locals. In combination with an awareness raising campaign on the value of local heritage, such good practice can provide inspiration to any region aiming to preserve its traditions while staying up to date with modern life.

Potential for learning or transfer
Building a house respecting local architectural style by using such common projects for specific houses in historical areas, represents many advantages for investors and local communities in preserving the local values, revitalizing the villages’ architecture and enhancing the tourism potential.
An investor has the possibility to receive free of charge the technical project of traditional house made by experienced architects, based on contemporary solutions for materials and construction methods and having the advantage of diminished expenses that can be used for speeding up the construction.
The Plan for Revitalization of Maramures Village is a good practice to be used by other regions in promoting and supporting innovative solutions to combine tradition, history, authenticity and communion with nature. The success of that initiative is ensured through public–private cooperation, significant promotion of local tradition and sustained efforts to attract local and foreign investors.
