This is the good practice's implementation level. It can be national, regional or local.
About this good practice
This session is intended to raise awareness of the problem of marine litter and conservation of the dune system.
Since the operational assistants are the ones who, on a daily basis, deal with the problem of marine litter and the need to remove it from the beaches, there was the need to pass more information about it and to reinforce the need of waste selection to recycling, so that they can become agents of sensibilization for this problem.
At the same time, it is intended to alert that mechanical cleaning can damage the dunal systems if they pass nearby the dune base, as well as to interfere with the biodiversity of fauna and flora in this ecosystem.
The main stakeholder is the Municipality of Viana do Castelo and the beneficiaries are the operational assistants and, therefore, the beach users.

Resources needed
For this action, between 1 and 2 senior municipal technicians are needed to carry out training actions for all elements.
Evidence of success
The success can be seen evaluating the evolution of the dune systems on the different beaches (i.e, annual images, biodiversity monitoring,…).
Another option can be to assess the increase (in percentage) of waste placed in recycling bins. Another important indicator will be the number and/or percentage of operation assistants trained.

Potential for learning or transfer
This practice can be easily replicated in other places or contexts, for instance, at the level of all coastal parishes or even other assocaitions/groups.
Always taking into account the specificities of each territory and team collaboration, this action may be disseminated to other muncipalities.
